And who can speak of his descendants?

and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
11 After the suffering of his soul,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

The Shepherd and His Flock

He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice." 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.

7 Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who ever came before me where thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish."

7 Then the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

8 So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"

9 He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land."

10 This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)

4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says:

"See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame."

7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,

"The stone the builders rejected
has become the capstone,"

8 and,

"A stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall."

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

16 "This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.

and I will write them on their minds."

Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"

8 But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

True Fasting

1 "Shout it aloud, do not hold back.
Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion

they seem eager to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that does what is right
and has not forsaken the commands of its God.
They ask me for just decisions
and seem eager for God to come near them.
3 'Why have we fasted,' they say,
'and you have not seen it?
Why have we humbled ourselves,
and you have not noticed?'

"Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please
and exploit all your workers.
4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists.
You cannot fast as you do today
and expect your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed

Is that what you call a fast?
a day acceptable to the Lord?

39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

40 But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."

42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.

27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel.

Who Am I?

1 O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
above the heavens.
2 From the lips of children and infants
you have ordained praise
because of your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?
5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.

6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you put everything under his feet:

I'm so surprised that today's Daily Bread entry is actually based on one of favourite songs, Casting Crowns’ "Who Am I?”

This song touched me from deep within, to make me realise just how small and temporal I am. I can just be gone from the face of the earth just at any split second. That everything I do is so small in comparison to what my God has done.

Yet through all these, God still loves me, He still cares for me, He still wants to know every little thought that goes through my head, He still carries me, He still guides me, He still sends His precious Son Jesus to die for me. Just who am I to deserve this?

If I could, for a second, make you ponder over these questions, what will be your answer?

Know this, that no matter how broken our life may be, how rough life’s journey is, how much things fail in your life that you just want to give up everything, know this. God loves you. God yearns to be with you. God is love. And His love never fails.

Mark 12:41-44 (NIV)
The Widow's Offering

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."

I will always remember this message that was printed a piece of pink paper, being glued onto a small box right beside the door of the first church that I attend, carrying the message, "God loves a cheerful giver".

At that time, I was not a fervent Christian, and I was being quite a miser during the usual offerings session. Being skeptical to a certain extent, I did not believe that whatever I give to God, God will actually give me back. This thought used to ring in my head, “If I give Him $10, He’ll give me back? Then why He wants me to give Him the money in the first place?”

Thus at that time, I will only give $2, and I'm not being a cheerful giver at all.

Over the years, as I mature as a person, I begin to think about more than just God giving me back my money. Though I know the limitation of my finite mind, here are two issues that I can think of.

The money that goes to the church will in turn be used to help other needy people, whereby their lives may be touched by Christ, without me ever knowing! Another will be to cover the operational cost of maintaining the church, so that people can actually come to Christ to listen to His messages.

Keeping this thought in mind, my faith grew and I became a much more cheerful and generous giver. I learnt too, that I misunderstood His message. It is not that He will give me back my money, but it is that He will bless me in ways that I have no control over, because of my faith in Him.

As a result of my increased faith, I have experienced the change that God brings in me. My life, though not always smooth, has been smoother, and I feel that I am indeed blessed by God in more ways than one, in more ways than I can explain.

How true it is, that giving is easier when you give yourself to the Lord. And rest assured that God will bless you exponentially when you have faith and trust in Him, just like what the widow did.

The Waiting

Genesis 15:1-6 (NIV)
God's Covenant With Abram

1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:

"Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,
your very great reward."

2 But Abram said, "O Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" 3 And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir."

4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir." 5 He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars - if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Today's message seems so intended to stir my emotions. As it is very personal, I can't share it here. But I just want to thank God for this message.

Faith is definitely something that we have to hold on steadfast. Abraham kept his faith in God and waited for twenty-five years for the promise of a son. Therefore I must wait too, for God to reveal his true intentions for me.

The key to have faith in God is cultivating both trust and patience, I believe. Many times I tend to be either impatient or lacking trust in God, and take things into my hands, which most often than not, screws things up.

This time, let me cast all my worries onto You Lord, for I want to trust You for Your deliverance.

Genesis 12:1-8 (NIV)
The Call of Abram

1 The Lord had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you."

2 "I will make you into a great nation
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you. "

4 So Abram left, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

Recently life has been very hectic for me; the daily work that last from sunrise to sunset, and even through some nights. Many a times, I even feel weak and start to complain to the people around me. Think I'm lost.

This passage reminds me though, that even when Abraham was already seventy-five years old, he still trusted God for directions, and that God will provide a dwelling place for him on earth, and in heaven.

This starts to resonate a feeling of assurance in me that I lost during this period of working life. No matter how hectic life becomes, my God will always provide, always protect. I just need to look to him for provision, and keep my faith.

Colossians 3:1-7 (NIV)
Rules for Holy Living

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

Having an eternal perspective is great, but I guess many a times as humans, we get too caught up with the rat-race. Strangely though, just when I thought I'm running out of time in my project, doing my daily devotional and praising God will calm me down and prepare me for the day.

It's true I believe, that when you choose to praise God in the harshest of times, when everything seems adverse and odds are stacking, He'll show you his way in the subtlest of ways, and the hardest things are not so big a problem after all.

I like this snippet from a particular paragraph that teaches about what God values in today's reading:

Throughout the pages of the Bible, He reminds us that He values people above possessions and our character above our performance. Those are the truths that last forever. - Bill Crowder

I used to ponder, what does Jesus mean when He said, "Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Matt. 6:20), but now I do.

Moth, rust and thieves can't take over our soul or character in heaven. These things are eternal, and so are what God looks for. So what we have to do during our limited span of time in life, is to do things that'll touch people's lives, and cultivating our character. These stays with us, till forever and ever.

The Walking Purchase

5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with 'unclean' hands?"

6 He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

" 'These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.

7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are but rules taught by men.'

8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men."

9 And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! 10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' 11 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother: 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God), 12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

Initially, I did not understand exactly what these verses are trying to say.

But in the daily bread, it explained in a way layman like me can understand. The scribes and Pharisees were declaring a portion of their income as "a gift to God" to keep for themselves, in the name that they are using it to care for their aged parents, which was a hypocritical practice.

Indeed, we have to keep asking God to help us understand the Bible's intended purpose, and not as a tool to get what we want.

It makes me realise too, that I need to do what the Holy Spirit prompts, and not what men prompts. I do not wish to join in to traditions that were passed down for generations, that were just simply rules of men, not of God.

Slow Down And Live

Psalm 1 (NIV)
1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Although today's message was to slow down and live, I found that the scriptural verses spoke directly to my heart and touched me from within.

I've just heard about a couple of unhappy events that had happened to a Christian friend of mine, and how people around her are doing deeds that are not righteous, hurting her in the process. She's feeling down and naturally, I felt angry and actually had lots of bad thoughts against those people.

Thank God for His message today. It spoke directly to my anger that I should meditate on His words rather than fueling the flame that the devil is trying to instigate. In Psalm 1 I find my peace and assurance, that the things the people are doing to my friend will eventually end, for God is ever-watchful for His sheep.

May Your truth and light shines upon the helpless and dispels the darkness.
